Interesting stuff, pink. I love your thoughts on the emerging church too. I'm looking forward to more.

Mark - I too am put off a bit by 'bigness'. Our church is about 120-ish and I hope it stays that way. Well, I hope it grows, but as it does we ought to split into small manageable groups about our size now. Or something. Big just feels creepy somehow.

On the other hand, I can't seem to escape this longing to be a part of something big and important. I dunno if it's left over 'God's Modern Day Movement' mentality or what, but it still haunts me. Sigh.

Keep going!!

As an aside these “Is it declining? Is it just different? If it is in decline, when did the decline start?” are just questions I'm asking. The class is looking at teh old testament and its geography. Those questions occured to me after we talked about how crappy the Israelites were at teaching theit kids...apparently.

The more I look, the more I realize "Next Big Things" aren't *necessarily* even steps in the right direction spiritually. Looking at how the first century Christians seem to have operated, well, there was very little of the Pop! and Sizzle! that makes a Next Big Thing. Frankly, I'm not looking for a Next Big Thing any more than I'm looking for a Mecca, Gainesville, Boston, Los Angeles, or even an Epicenter Of Change (to quote HKL). I just want to follow Jesus (remember him?) and get those close to me to do likewise. Being part of Something Big kinda puts me off a little...

Hi pk,

I'm enjoying your exposition on this topic. And I'm waiting anxiously for the bottom line to come into view!

Good point about the emerging church. I think the "next big thing" will have to be more compelling to the common man. It has to be simply expressed in plain language. There has to be a strong motivation to be part of it. That means it has to be starkly different from the alternatives (including the secular world)--different in a particularly interesting way.
