Nekorian translates to “the magical ones”
Namtemorian translates to “the mundane ones”
Not taken seriously by even the most superstitous of scholars, the magical ones are the subject of stories to scare children in civilized lands. Most tales involve the Nekorians terrorizing villages by causing people’s own furniture to attack them. As such, many in the Hesberian Empire, if they think of them at all, describe them inaccurately as ghosts.
They are not ghosts at all. They are incorperal and sentient beings of energy. Like all sentient beings, they are able to manipulate magic, however, their spells seem to differ wildly from many known by wizards throughout the world. Many of their spells help them to survive by giving them the ability to transfer matter into energy, apparently as a way of ‘feeding’.
However, despite their power, they are symbiotic with the Namtemorians. It appears that as incorperal entities, they have no ability to mine certain elements they need to survive. These materials can be harmful to many living creatures if encountered in sufficient quantities. Although the Namtemorians cannot mine these materials, they are able to build simple machines and clockwork. They were not able to create mining machines for the Nekorians, but they were able to create simple parts that the Nekorians could assemble and ‘possess’ so that they could mine the materials.
It seems that when the Nekorians first appeared, the Namtemorians were the first to make intelligent contact with them. Being simple and good-hearted creatures, they wanted to do everything they could to help. In return for their efforts, the Nekorians fiercely defend them and use their magic to encourage crop growth and the health of local herds. Unfortunately for the Namtemorians, they have become so dependant on this magic, they are unable to farm and herd without it.
The simple parts the Namtemorians create has become their primary industry. Through the years, the Nekorians have used their magic to assist in the construction as well, so that even this industry has become reliant on magic to function. The difference is that all part creators have to learn the ‘old ways’ first in order to create these parts in the first place. In theory, they could create them without the Nekorians, but no one else have a use for them except as curiousities.
These parts are quite simple – a box, a drill, a two-spaded shovel with opposable motion, a wheel, a pole, and a rotational joint. With these parts, the Nekorians assemble themselves physically as a mechanical drill on wheels with two shovel ‘hands’ and a few boxes towed behind to store the material. With magic and skill, these parts have become highly stylized. Each individual Nekorian adorns themselves with styles and colors to make them unique.
Recently, the Nekorians have sought to look similar to the Namtemorians in order to interact with the rest of the world. Efforts to create these parts have not been entirely successful. The hands look okay, the heads look fine, though the mouth doesn’t move, as well as the torso. The issue seems to be in creating arms, legs, and feet.
This explains recent sighting of wheeled creatures with large pinchers, no arms, no legs, and stone faces.
For their part, the Namtemorians are content with their current arrangement and have no real desire to explore the world as their counterparts. Being small, squat humanoids, they are content to live aparts from the ‘giants’ in surrounding areas. Humans and Ganarii are on guarded, but peaceful relations with the Namtemorians. The Ganarii seem to have better relations than anyone.
There are a cult of Ilosians that worship the Nekorians themselves. They use the simple parts as emblems on their clothes and have even fashioned a type of mace that looks like the drill. Outside of these Ilosians, a few humans, and the Ganarii, they have had no contact with other species.
